15Web Tools Platform (WTP)</h1>
david_williamsdc1fdb12006-02-22 07:23:19 +000016
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000017<p>This update site provides the features of the Eclipse Web Tools
18Platform (WTP).</p>
david_williamsdc1fdb12006-02-22 07:23:19 +000019<p>It not only provides the data for WTP updates, it also provides
david_williamsef53cbb2006-02-22 16:07:47 +000020"pointers" to the prerequisite projects (JDT, EMF, GEF, and JEM).</p>
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000021<p>It does assume, however, that at least the Eclipse 3.1.2 Platform
22Feature is installed. For example, to start with minimum foot-print, you
23can use the <a
david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000024 href="">Platform
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000025Runtime Binary</a> appropriate for your operating system. (The Platform
26Runtime Binary section is about half way down that page.)</p>

david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000028<p>Note, if you are starting with Eclipse 3.1.0, there are some
29separate and <a
30 href="">specific
31instructions</a> for updating the base platform to the 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 level.</p>

david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000034<p>To use this update site in your existing installation of Eclipse,
35add the following URL as a remote update site in your update manager, if it does not already have it.</p>
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000036<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b> <code></code></b></p>
37<p><b>Tip: </b>any time you get a chance, export your bookmark files
38from the "add a site" dialog. Having them saved away in a safe place
39makes it much easier to re-create another development environment.</p>
david_williamsdc1fdb12006-02-22 07:23:19 +000040<p>See <a
david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000041 href="">Eclipse
david_williamsdc1fdb12006-02-22 07:23:19 +000042Help</a> for general information about using Update Manager.</p>
david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000043<p><b>Tip: </b>To lessen download time (by installing the minimum
44number of features), first select the desired WTP feature in the Eclipse
45update install dialog, then use the 'select required' button to select
46only the minimum required prerequisite features.</p>
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000047<p><b>Tip: </b>If you are able, it may be easiest to start a fresh
48development environment based on 3.1.2 and then update to use WTP 1.0.1
49and its pre-reqs. And, since the workbench may have to shutdown and
50restart several times (if updating several features), you can you do the
51upgrade with an empty workspace and once satisfied all is well, then use
52the -data option on the Eclipse command line (or shortcut) to point to
53your workspace of interest.</p>
david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000054<p><b>Tip: </b>Both before and <i>after</i> installing "new"
55features, you may want to use update manager to "check for updates to
56currently installed features". In some scenarios just installing WTP
57will not necessarily upgrade all components, such as EMF, to the highest
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000058available level.</p>
david_williamse08a29d2006-04-16 22:01:08 +000059<p><b>Tip: </b>After you install WTP 1.0.1, you can enjoy using
60Update Manager again to "Search for New Features to Install". You'll
61notice that once WTP is installed, we (in WTP) add BIRT and TPTP <i>discovery
david_williamsb3b48b62006-02-22 17:02:53 +000062sites</i> to your Update Manager sites, since there is some cool
63applications that use WTP, BIRT and TPTP together.</p>
